Four ways a downloader breaks
Every downloader does the same job underneath: it asks a platform for the file behind a page. There are only so many ways that goes wrong.

The first row cuts both ways, which is easy to forget when something breaks. Our TikTok page exists because a platform we had written off started working again, not because it always did.
The block you cannot see
Some hosts refuse connections that come from datacenters, and that single fact explains a lot of unexplained failures. In our own probing, Vimeo returned a fetch failure on two live URLs because the outbound address was blocked. Reddit, Pinterest, Twitch and Snapchat could not be verified from a datacenter at all. None of those are on our list as a result.
This is the failure that feels like a bug and is not one. Your phone sits on a home or mobile network; the tool sits in a rack. Same video, same link, different doorway. Why the name you remember is the risk
Because these tools break and vanish, the search results fill with successors. The same name with a year bolted on, a suffix, a spelling that is one letter off. Some are the original operator on a new domain. Some are strangers who registered a name people already search for.
That is the part worth slowing down on. Whoever runs the page sees the URL you paste, your IP address and the time you sent it, and the operator you trusted two years ago may not be the one receiving it today. The quick checks are in are free video downloader sites safe.
The boundary does not move with the tool, either. Save your own uploads, content a platform offers for saving, and public posts you are keeping to watch offline. None of this is a way around private accounts, paywalls or age gates, and the platform’s terms still apply to you.
What breaks less
Fewer moving parts, and limits stated instead of hidden. A page that tells you playlist and channel URLs are unsupported is more useful than one that accepts them and hands back nothing.

A maintained project does get patched quickly when a platform changes, which is a real advantage. The catch on iPhone is that these are desktop command-line programs and iOS ships no general-purpose command line, so the practical routes on a phone stay the same two: a website in Safari, or an app.

Because each platform is a separate integration, not one switch. One host changing its delivery breaks that host and leaves the rest untouched. It also works in reverse. TikTok sat on our own unsupported list for months before it was re-probed in August 2026 and started returning a normal MP4.
