Why the GIF You Saved Is a Video File
You asked for a GIF and got an MP4. That swap did not happen during the download. Platforms convert uploaded GIFs to silent looping video, so the GIF was gone long before you pasted the link anywhere.
The GIF was already a video before you downloaded it. X and most platforms convert an uploaded GIF into a silent looping MP4, because the video file is a fraction of the size. A downloader hands you whatever the platform stored, so what comes back is an MP4 and not a .gif.
The conversion happens at upload
GIF is a format from 1987. It holds 256 colours per frame and barely compresses, so three seconds of footage can run ten times the size of the same clip as MP4. A platform storing billions of them has an obvious reason to convert, and it does that on the way in rather than at playback.
On X the behaviour is consistent enough that a GIF post returns an MP4 every time we fetch one. What the timeline labels a GIF is stored and served as a silent looping video. The label survives in the interface. The file underneath it does not.

The download is not a degraded GIF. It is a different kind of file that happens to look the same when it plays.

Two rows there are upgrades. The MP4 is smaller and its colour is better, which is why nobody at the platform end considers this a loss.
Three things it breaks
- Chat apps decide by file type, so it arrives as a video attachment rather than an inline looping image. It plays the same. It just does not behave like the GIF you meant to send.
- Transparency is gone. A GIF can make one colour see-through; MP4 has no alpha channel, so anything that was clear comes back on a solid background.
- The file is silent, which reads like a broken download. It is not, and it is worth telling apart from a video that genuinely lost its audio.
Converting back is usually the wrong move
You can convert the MP4 to GIF, and it costs you twice. The file normally gets bigger, and the colour is squeezed down to 256 per frame, so smooth gradients turn into visible bands. That is the same one-way rule that governs quality: a later step cannot restore what an earlier one threw away.
It is also usually pointless. Upload that GIF anywhere and the platform converts it straight back to video. Convert only when a tool in front of you refuses anything else.
Where the file lands

Why is there no audio track at all? +
Because there never was one. A GIF cannot carry sound, so the video a platform makes from it is silent by design. That is not a failed or half-finished download.
Does every platform do this? +
