Is a WAV Download Better Than MP3?
No. A WAV made from a YouTube or SoundCloud download is a compressed stream unpacked into a bigger container, not a better recording. Here is what the conversion actually changes, and the narrow case where WAV is still the file you want.
No. A WAV file made from a YouTube or SoundCloud download is a lossy stream unpacked into an uncompressed container. The audio was compressed before it ever reached you, and decompressing it puts nothing back. What you get is a file about ten times larger that sounds exactly the same.
The audio was compressed before you saw it
Every platform re-encodes on upload. SoundCloud transcodes what the artist sends, so the ceiling is set by SoundCloud’s encoder rather than by the master. YouTube does the same to the audio track it stores alongside each video.
That matters because a downloader can only ever hand you what the platform serves. There is no hidden original sitting behind the stream, waiting for the right output format to unlock it.
What the conversion actually does
Converting to WAV decodes the compressed audio back into raw samples and writes them out with no compression at all. The samples are real; the detail the encoder discarded is not coming back. Only the file size moves.
| File | What it holds | A 4-minute track |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 at 128 kbps | The stream, encoded once | About 4 MB |
| WAV made from that MP3 | The same audio, uncompressed | About 40 MB |
| WAV from a studio master | Audio that was never compressed | About 40 MB |
The first and second rows sound identical. Only the third is the thing people picture when they search for WAV.
When WAV is still the right file
There is a real case for it, just not as a quality upgrade:
- Editing and sampling software prefers uncompressed input, and some DJ tools refuse variable-bitrate MP3 outright.
- Re-encoding a lossy file over and over loses a little each pass, so an uncompressed working copy is the safer format to edit against.
- Archiving something you recorded yourself, where the source really was uncompressed to begin with.
For listening, none of that applies. MP3 or MP4 is the more useful question on a download page, because that one changes what you actually receive.
What our converter gives you, and where it runs
The YouTube to MP3 page returns 128 kbps at 48 kHz, converted on the server so your phone only receives a finished file. SoundCloud tracks come down as MP3 from the stream SoundCloud serves. Neither offers WAV, for the reason above.
Audio is a website feature. The iPhone app’s Save from Link handles video only, so an audio link belongs in Safari, and those files land in the Files app rather than the vault. Anything you do move into the vault is encrypted on the device with AES-256-GCM under a key derived from your PIN with Argon2id, with no Arca account or hosted copy of your vault. The ordinary limits hold too: forget the PIN and nothing is recoverable, and an unlocked vault handed to someone is not protected by any of it.

Music is also where the legal exposure stops being theoretical. Converting commercially released music you hold no rights to is copyright infringement in most countries, whatever the tool permits. Your own uploads, licensed material, a track whose artist turned on downloads. Those are the cases this is for, and the platform’s terms still apply to you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download a YouTube video as WAV? +
Not from our converter. The audio comes down as a 128 kbps MP3 at 48 kHz. A WAV built from the same stream would hold identical audio in a file roughly ten times the size, so the option is not offered.
Does converting an MP3 to WAV improve the quality? +
No. Decoding restores the samples, not the detail thrown away when the audio was first encoded. The conversion changes file size and compatibility, and nothing you can hear.
Is WAV worth it for DJ or editing software? +
As a working file, yes. Editors and samplers prefer uncompressed input, and re-encoding the same track repeatedly loses a little each time. Start from the best source you legally hold, though, not from a converted download.

Can You Get the Song Out of a YouTube Short?
Not as a clean track. A Short's audio is one mixed stream, with the music, the voice and the effects bounced together before YouTube ever served it. Here is what a download actually hands you, and where the song really lives.

Your MP3 Downloaded. Why Isn't It in the Music App?
The file is fine. It landed in Files, and the Music app never reads Files. Here is what plays an MP3 on an iPhone, and why the converter you used was only ever doing half the job.

Can You Download a YouTube Playlist as MP3 on iPhone?
Not in one step. Downloaders take one video at a time, and a playlist link has no video in it. What each link type returns, where the rights question lands, and the fastest way to work through a playlist by hand.
