Why Won't a Video From X Download?
A video on X can refuse to download even when the post is public. Usually it's one of five things: a protected account, a sensitive-media flag, a deleted post, a quoted post, or a link card that was never an X video.
Most failures come from the post, not the downloader. The account is protected, the video is flagged as sensitive, the post was deleted, the video sits inside a quoted post, or what you see is a link card for another site. Each one looks the same from the outside: a public-looking video that won’t save.
Five reasons an X video won’t save
| What you see | What’s going on | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Lock icon next to the name | Protected account, followers only | Nothing. Ask the poster |
| ”Sensitive content” warning | X serves it only to signed-in viewers | Usually nothing |
| Post still loads, video gone | Post or media was deleted | Nothing left to fetch |
| Video in a boxed post inside another | It belongs to the quoted post | Copy the quoted post’s link |
| Thumbnail with a site name under it | A link card, not an X video | Use the source site’s link |
The first three are X deciding who gets the file. The last two are the wrong link, and those you can fix.
The quoted post trap
When someone quotes a post, the video you see is embedded from the original. The link you copied points to the quote, which may hold nothing but text. Tap the quoted box to open the original, then copy that link. It’s the post the video actually belongs to.
Reposts don’t cause this problem. The share menu on a repost already gives you the original post’s link.
When the video isn’t on X at all
A preview with a site name underneath, like a YouTube or news article card, is a link card. X shows a thumbnail but never hosts the video. Open the card, copy the link from the site it goes to, and use the matching page, such as the YouTube download page.
GIFs are the reverse case. They do download, but X stores them as short silent videos, so you get an MP4. Convert it afterwards if you need an actual GIF.
The public post that still fails
This is the frustrating one. X has been putting more of its media service behind a login, and two posts that look equally public can behave differently. A post that downloaded last month may not today.
A downloader could get around this by signing in with an X account on its server. The X download page doesn’t, on purpose. It would mean running every request through someone’s X login, and that is a line this site won’t cross. When a public post fails for this reason, the honest answer is that X isn’t serving it to logged-out visitors.
Before you give up, check the link itself. Links ending in /video/1 or /photo/2 and links with tracking parameters are fine, since those get trimmed automatically. Links to a profile, a search or a list are not posts, so there’s nothing to download. The guide to which link to copy covers the formats that work.

Saving X videos on iPhone
Arca’s Save from Link, a premium feature, takes a shared or pasted post link, downloads the video and encrypts it on your iPhone with AES-256-GCM. The key comes from your PIN through Argon2id, there’s no account, and Arca does not host a copy of your vault. If you share a link from X while the vault is locked, it’s queued and downloads the next time you unlock.
It runs into the same limits as any downloader. It can’t open protected, sensitive-flagged or deleted posts, and it saves video only. It also can’t protect a phone you hand over unlocked.
Save only what you have the right to keep, such as your own posts or public videos for personal offline viewing. X’s Terms of Service still apply, whatever tool you use.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the same X video download one day and fail the next? +
X keeps moving parts of its media service behind a login, and which posts that affects changes without notice. Nothing about the post has to change for the result to change.
Can I download a video from a protected X account? +
No. Protected posts are only shown to approved followers, and a downloader has no business getting around that. If you need the video, ask the person who posted it.
Why is the downloaded X video blurrier than on my screen? +
X re-encodes video on upload and usually caps it at 1280×720. The download is the best copy X serves, so a sharper version only exists on the creator's side.

Not as a clean track. A Short's audio is one mixed stream, with the music, the voice and the effects bounced together before YouTube ever served it. Here is what a download actually hands you, and where the song really lives.
