Two tools, two different jobs
The confusion between these two comes from assuming they do the same thing because both involve “encrypting your photos.” They don’t. Advanced Data Protection, Apple’s opt-in feature, is about protecting your iCloud library where it lives on Apple’s servers. A photo vault is about protecting specific photos where they live on your device. Those are genuinely different jobs, and neither replaces the other.
Put simply, one guards the cloud copy and one guards the phone in your hand. Advanced Data Protection makes sure that a breach of Apple’s servers, a government request, or Apple itself can’t read your synced photo library. A vault makes sure that a person holding your unlocked phone can’t open a specific set of photos. You can see how those are different threats, and why a tool built for one doesn’t automatically cover the other.
Getting this straight matters because a lot of privacy advice treats them as interchangeable, which leaves people either over-relying on one or dismissing the other. The rest of this lays out exactly what each protects, where each leaves a gap, and why the two fit together rather than compete.
What iCloud Advanced Data Protection does
Advanced Data Protection is genuinely strong, and it’s worth turning on. By default, most iCloud data, including your photos, is encrypted, but Apple holds the keys, which means Apple can technically access it and can be compelled to hand it over. Turning on Advanced Data Protection changes that: it extends end-to-end encryption to iCloud Photos and most other categories, so the keys live only on your trusted devices and Apple no longer has them.
The practical effect is that your iCloud photo library becomes unreadable to anyone but you, even Apple. A breach of Apple’s servers would expose nothing usable, and Apple can’t comply with a request for photos it can no longer decrypt. Two honest caveats are worth noting. Because the keys are yours alone, Apple can’t help you recover your data if you lose access, so ADP requires you to set up a recovery contact or recovery key. And a few things stay outside its protection: Shared Albums and “anyone with the link” shares aren’t end-to-end encrypted even with ADP on, so a photo you’ve shared that way isn’t covered. But for the core job of protecting your library in the cloud, it’s excellent.
What a photo vault does
A photo vault works at a completely different layer: the app on your device. Instead of encrypting your whole library in the cloud, it takes specific photos you choose and seals them inside an encrypted container, locked behind their own PIN, separate from your device passcode. The rest of your library stays where it is; the vault is just for the images you want sealed.
The point of that separate lock is what it protects against. Your normal Photos app is open the moment your phone is unlocked, so anyone who has your unlocked phone can scroll through everything. A vaulted photo isn’t visible there at all; opening it requires the vault’s own PIN, which your device passcode doesn’t provide. We explain the mechanics in how photo vault encryption works.
So a vault is narrow but deep. It doesn’t touch your whole library or your cloud storage; it takes a chosen set of photos and makes them inaccessible to someone holding your unlocked device. That’s a real, common threat that cloud encryption simply isn’t designed to address.
They protect against different threats
The clearest way to see the difference is to line up specific threats and ask which tool actually helps. The table below does that.

Read down the columns and the split is obvious. Advanced Data Protection owns the cloud-side threats and covers your entire library; a vault owns the on-device, someone-has-your-unlocked-phone threat for the specific photos you place in it. Where one says “protects,” the other usually says “doesn’t apply,” which is the whole reason they complement rather than compete.
The gap Advanced Data Protection leaves
Here’s the part that surprises people: Advanced Data Protection does nothing to stop someone who is holding your unlocked phone. Apple’s own description makes this clear, that accessing your encrypted data requires an unlocked trusted device. That’s a security feature against the cloud, but it also means that once your phone is unlocked, the protection has already been satisfied, and your Photos app is fully open.
So all the everyday, in-person situations where privacy actually gets tested, handing your phone to someone to show one picture, a partner picking it up, leaving it unlocked on a desk, a repair or border check, are outside what ADP protects. It was never meant to lock your Photos app; it’s meant to keep your library unreadable in the cloud. Both are worth having, but the unlocked-phone gap is real, and it’s exactly the gap a vault is built to close.
Consider a concrete case. You hand your unlocked phone to a friend to show them one photo, and they swipe the wrong way. With Advanced Data Protection on, your library is still perfectly encrypted in the cloud, and that does nothing to stop the next photo from appearing on screen, because the phone is unlocked and Photos is open. This is the scenario cloud encryption can’t touch, and it’s also the most common way private photos are actually seen.
None of this is a knock on Advanced Data Protection. It does its job extremely well. It just isn’t the job of stopping local access, and assuming it is leaves your most sensitive photos open in the one situation cloud encryption can’t help with.
The gap a vault leaves
To be equally honest about the other side, a photo vault has its own limits, and pretending otherwise would be the same mistake in reverse. A vault only protects what you actually put in it. The thousands of photos still in your main library get none of its protection, so a vault is not a substitute for library-wide security like ADP.
A vault also doesn’t inherently encrypt anything in the cloud, and this is where the design matters. If a vault syncs its contents to a server, you’re trusting that server; if it keeps everything on the device with no server, as a no-server vault does, there’s no cloud copy to protect in the first place, but there’s also no cloud backup if you lose the device. Either way, a vault isn’t doing what ADP does for your whole synced library.
So the vault’s weakness is the mirror image of ADP’s: it’s local and selective where ADP is cloud-wide and automatic. Deciding which photos even belong in a vault versus your general library is its own question, which we walk through in where to store private photos.
Why using both is the strongest setup
Once you see that each tool covers the other’s gap, the answer stops being “which one” and becomes “both, for different reasons.” Turn on Advanced Data Protection and your entire iCloud library is end-to-end encrypted against cloud breaches and outside access, automatically and for everything. Then put the handful of genuinely sensitive photos into a vault, and they’re also sealed against anyone holding your unlocked phone.
That combination closes both gaps at once. Your library is protected in the cloud, and your most private images are protected on the device, which no single tool does on its own. For most people, the practical routine is short:
- Turn on Advanced Data Protection for whole-library, cloud-side encryption, and set up your recovery contact or key.
- Use a vault for your most sensitive photos, so they stay sealed even on an unlocked phone.
- Keep the two straight in your head: ADP guards the cloud copy, the vault guards the phone in your hand.
Neither is a luxury the other makes pointless; they’re two halves of covering both places your photos are exposed.
