How to Remove Location Data From Your iPhone Photos

Your iPhone photos quietly store the exact spot where they were taken. Here is how to strip that location before you share a picture, how to switch it off for future shots, and when it actually matters.

Your iPhone stores the exact GPS location inside almost every photo you take. To remove it before sharing, open the photo in the Photos app, tap Options at the top of the share sheet, and switch off Location. You can also strip it from photos you already have, or stop the camera from recording it in the first place.

What location data is hiding in your photos

Every photo file carries a block of hidden information called EXIF data. Most of it is harmless: the date and time, the camera model, the lens, the exposure settings. One field is not harmless at all, and that’s the GPS location, the precise latitude and longitude of where you were standing when you pressed the shutter.

That coordinate is accurate to within a few meters. A photo of your dog on the living room floor quietly records your home address. A picture from your desk tags your workplace. Snap enough photos in the same spots and the metadata paints a clear map of where you live, work, and spend your evenings, all without a single word of caption.

The date and time stamps fill in the rest. They show not just where a photo was taken but when, so a handful of files can sketch a routine: this address most mornings, that one most nights. It’s the kind of pattern you would never write down for a stranger, yet your camera records it automatically, on every shot, unless you tell it to stop.

None of this is visible when you look at the picture. The location rides along invisibly inside the file, and it travels with the photo whenever the full file leaves your phone.

Who can actually see it

The good news is that the leak isn’t everywhere. Where your location survives depends entirely on how the photo leaves your device, and the difference is worth knowing so you don’t worry about the wrong things.

The pattern is clear once you see it. Big social platforms tend to strip metadata when you post, mostly for their own reasons, so a public Instagram photo usually isn’t leaking your address. The danger is in the direct shares, the full-resolution file you AirDrop, email, or send in a message, because that keeps the original EXIF intact. Selling something online and texting photos to a stranger is the classic way people hand over their home location without realizing it.

Remove the location when you share

The simplest habit is to strip the location at the moment you share, which leaves your stored photo untouched but sends a clean copy. It takes two extra taps.

  1. Open the Photos app and select the photo, or photos, you want to send.
  2. Tap the share button, the square with an arrow.
  3. At the very top of the share sheet, tap Options.
  4. Turn off the Location toggle, then tap Done.
  5. Share as normal, by message, email, or AirDrop.

The copy that goes out now has no GPS tag, while the original in your library keeps its location so your own map and memories still work. This is the method to reach for when you share a specific photo with someone you don’t fully trust with your address.

Remove the location from photos you already have

Sometimes you want the location gone from the stored photo itself, not just an outgoing copy. iOS lets you do that directly, and you can do it to many photos at once.

Open the photo, then swipe up on it or tap the information button, the small “i” in a circle. You’ll see a map if the photo has a location. Tap Adjust next to the location, then choose No Location. The GPS tag is removed from that photo for good. To clear a batch, select multiple photos first, tap the share button, scroll down to Adjust Location, and set it to No Location in one go.

This is the right tool when you’re about to back up or export a chunk of your library and you’d rather it not carry a trail of coordinates with it.

Stop the camera from saving location at all

If you’d rather not think about it every time, you can tell the camera to stop recording location entirely. Go to Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services, then Camera, and set it to Never.

From then on, new photos are taken without any GPS tag, so there’s nothing to strip later. The trade-off is that you lose the convenient “where was this taken” map view and the ability to search your library by place, which a lot of people genuinely like. It also does nothing to the thousands of photos already in your library, since those were tagged when you took them. Think of this switch as prevention for the future, not a cleanup for the past.

Messaging apps, screenshots, and batch tools

A few more cases cover most of how photos actually move around. Encrypted messengers vary: Signal strips photo metadata by default, so pictures you send there don’t carry location, and WhatsApp re-compresses images and drops most metadata in the process. Plain email and a Messages attachment, by contrast, tend to keep the original file intact, location and all. When in doubt, assume a direct send keeps the data unless you know the app removes it.

Screenshots are a handy shortcut. A screenshot of a photo is a brand-new image with no GPS tag at all, so sharing the screenshot instead of the original is a quick, if lower-quality, way to drop the location. A photo you’ve edited and saved as a fresh copy sometimes loses it too, though that isn’t guaranteed, so the share-sheet toggle remains the reliable method.

For clearing metadata from many photos at once, or for stripping every field rather than just the location, a dedicated metadata-remover app handles batches more comfortably than going one by one. Stick to a well-reviewed one, since you’re pointing it at your whole photo library. None of these replace the two-tap share-sheet method, but together they cover the odd cases it doesn’t, like a photo already heading out through an app you don’t fully control.

When this actually matters, and when not to overthink it

It’s easy to turn privacy into anxiety, so it helps to be honest about the real risks rather than treating every photo as a threat. Location stripping is worth the effort in a handful of specific situations.

  • Selling things online. Marketplace and classified photos taken at home hand your address to every stranger who messages you.
  • Sharing with people you don’t know well. Dating apps, new acquaintances, online forums, anywhere the recipient isn’t someone you’d give your address to anyway.
  • Posting photos of children. Keeping the location off pictures of kids, their school, or their routines is a sensible default.
  • Activists, journalists, or anyone with a real reason to stay unfindable. Here it stops being optional.

For the everyday stuff, a photo texted to a close friend or posted to a platform that strips metadata, you really don’t need to fuss. The goal isn’t paranoia about every image; it’s knowing where the leak is so you can close it on the photos that matter.

Stripping metadata and locking the photo are two different jobs

Here’s a distinction worth keeping straight, because it catches people out. Removing location data protects the photos you send out. It does nothing for the sensitive photos you simply keep on your phone, where the risk isn’t a hidden coordinate but anyone who picks up your unlocked device and opens the camera roll.

Those are two separate problems with two separate fixes. For photos you share, strip the EXIF as above. For photos you want to keep genuinely private on the device itself, the job belongs to a locked vault, and it’s worth understanding where your private photos should actually live.
